What Does Wicked Mean?

By Alex Watt, Wicked

If I were to ask you to describe what wicked looked like to you, what words would you use?

Do you picture a monster under the bed? Do you imagine some of the notorious serial killers that you learned about on Netflix documentaries?

"And I immediately began to question....what does wicked mean? And di I take counsel with them?"
"And I immediately began to question....what does wicked mean? And di I take counsel with them?"

Or maybe you associate it with people in your personal life? Someone who has repeatedly hurt you. Someone who only looks out for themselves even at the expense of others.

Psalms 1:1 “ Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!”

And I immediately began to question… what does wicked mean? And do I take counsel with them?

As I started reading different translations of the Bible, there was a word that was used in its place - ungodly.

And ungodly has a completely different picture than wicked, to me.

Ungoldly may look your friend who is trying to convince you to do something you know isn’t right and that you have time to figure out your relationship with God later.

Ungodly is your boyfriend or girlfriend telling you that it’s okay because you love each other and waiting for marriage is an old tradition.

Ungodly is your spouse who makes excuses with you for gossiping, judging, and belittling others instead of talking with you about what God calls us to do.

But make no mistake they are the same.

To be Ungodly is to be considered wicked.

That is why it is so important to surround ourselves with people who are truly trying to live life on the narrow path, people who are not letting the world be an

excuse for not following God’s word.

If you find yourself surrounded by people who are wicked, it’s time to find new counsel. If the advice you get is in direct conflict with God’s word, it’s time to find people who encourage you with the Word.

And it won’t be easy.

You’ll want someone who tells you what you want to hear, someone who will help you reason with why your circumstance is an exception to listening to what God tells us…

But Jesus promises good to those who love and obey Him.

He says we will be blessed, which translates to be right with God.

“But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and follow it.” Luke 11:28

So go and be blessed.
